Religions

Germany practices several religions although more Germans are non-religous than anything other religion. The largest religion is Christianity with about 48 million followers. Islam is next with 3.3 million followers, a big difference from Christians. Following closesly is Buddhism and Judaism.

Roman Catholic was the ain religion in the 15th century. In 1618-1648 there was a war between Catholics and Protestants. Now very few German Christians are very active in the church community.
Islam is the largest minority religion and has many different types of Islamic religion like: Sunni,Alevite, Shi’a, Sufi, Ahmadiyya, and Ismaili. The first muslims came to Germany in the 18th century for diplomatic purposes between the Germans and the Ottoman Empire. In the 1st world war 15,000 muslims were imprisoned, but after the world wars in 1961 the population began to increase.
Before the Nazis, approximately 600,000 jews lived in Gemany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall about 90,000 jews settled in the country. Now, Germany (especially Berlin) has the fastest growing Jewish community world-wide, and Germans are even more accepting than the ex-soviet realm.
Germany has changed a lot.
